Did you know that
for some time large companies have been downsizing—essentially, firing
large numbers of employees wholesale—to ensure profitability, even
survival, during harsh economic times? Add the coronavirus and
companies are putting staffs on leave and announcing layoffs. Most
talented people cannot even work from home. Before the pandemic,
companies are no longer honoring the psychological contracts or the
"promises or expectations" that are exchanged between workers and
employers are a thing of the past. Companies are telling their
employees, "We can no longer afford it." Instead of companies giving
lifelong performing employees a "gold watch" they're giving them the
BOOT! Loyalty is dead. |

While companies have
been getting meaner and leaner, enterprising people have become more
resourceful at finding ways to demonstrate and increase their income.
Smart employees see themselves as free agents and are continuously
looking for ways to improve their skills, competencies, reputation, and
marketability.
When you’re working independently as a free agent, there will
undoubtedly be times you take jobs that you don’t have to drive to a
particular location. Your passion may be in the distribution of mobile
marketing apps, for example, and this job requires fewer qualifications
in comparison to more specialized professions. The small cafes and
restaurant; salons and barber shops; boutiques and retail shops; repair
shops and service centers; the deep-pocketed doctor who wants an
exclusive social app for their plastic surgery patients and so many more
small business owners.
There are plenty of small projects to take, and smart free agents know
any project can lead to more work later on. Between new technologies and
app updates, the simple mobile marketing app for examples above could
also bring in residual revenue for years.
Those with plenty of work – or independent projects that bring in
consistent revenue, such as the marketing app – can attest to the
benefits of free agency. When done properly, it’s easily one of the
better ways to make a living and it just might be better than enduring
your current employment.
